Texas Rental Car Insurance Rules

What your personal Texas auto policy covers on a rental, when to buy rental coverage at the counter, and what credit card coverage actually does.

7 min read Updated June 1, 2026

Your Texas auto policy generally extends to short-term rental cars in the U.S. — but with important limits. Knowing what's covered prevents both costly counter upsells and surprise out-of-pocket bills.

What your personal policy extends

  • Liability at your existing limits
  • Collision and comprehensive (subject to your deductible) if you carry them
  • PIP / MedPay at your existing limits
  • Uninsured / underinsured motorist

What your policy doesn't cover

  • Loss of use charges the rental company bills while the car is in the shop
  • Diminished value claimed by the rental company
  • Administrative fees
  • Rentals longer than ~30 days
  • Most rentals outside the U.S.

When to buy CDW at the counter

  • You don't carry collision/comprehensive on your own policy
  • You're renting outside the U.S.
  • You want to avoid filing a claim and surcharging your personal policy

Credit card rental coverage

Most major credit cards offer secondary collision coverage when you pay for the rental with the card and decline the counter CDW. A handful of premium cards offer primary coverage. Read the benefits guide before traveling.

Mexico rentals

Most Texas personal policies stop at the border. Rentals into Mexico require a Mexican-issued liability policy — usually offered through the rental company or bookable in advance through your agent.

Frequently asked questions
