Filing a claim feels overwhelming — especially right after a crash. The steps below break it into manageable pieces.
Step 1: At the scene
- Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt
- Move vehicles out of traffic if it's safe and they're drivable
- Photograph all vehicles, license plates, the scene, and any visible injuries
- Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance company names, and policy numbers
- Get the police report number — Texas requires reports for accidents involving injury, death, or $1,000+ in damage
Step 2: Notify your insurer
Call your insurer (or your agent — that's what we're here for) as soon as you're safe. Most carriers offer 24/7 claims hotlines. The faster you file, the faster the claim moves.
Step 3: Inspection and estimate
The carrier will assign an adjuster who inspects your vehicle, reviews the police report, and issues a repair estimate or total-loss determination.
Step 4: Repair or settlement
If your vehicle is repairable, you choose a body shop and the insurer pays the shop directly (less your deductible). If it's a total loss, the insurer pays the actual cash value to you or your lender.
Step 5: Subrogation
If the other driver was at fault, your insurer may pursue their insurer for reimbursement — including refunding your deductible if successful.
