Accident at the El Paso Border Crossing: What to Do

Crashes at Bridge of the Americas, Ysleta, or Paso del Norte involve a unique mix of CBP, EPPD, and DPS jurisdictions. Here is how to handle one.

El Paso's four international bridges see millions of vehicle crossings per year. Crashes on the bridges or in the inspection lanes happen often — usually low-speed but legally complex because of the federal jurisdiction.

Stop and stay put

Inside the CBP inspection area, you cannot leave the scene until cleared by CBP officers. They will secure the area and then call EPPD or DPS to write the actual crash report.

Which insurance applies?

If the crash happens on the US side of the border line, your Texas policy applies normally. If the crash happens on the Mexico side, only your Mexico tourist policy will respond. The border line is well-marked on each bridge.

Document carefully

Cameras and recording are restricted in CBP inspection areas. Take notes by hand: bridge name, lane number, time of crossing, officer badge numbers, and any witnesses.

If you were entering Mexico

Mexican federal police handle crashes on the Mexico side of the bridge. Your Mexico insurer's emergency line should be your first call after authorities.

If you were entering the US

EPPD typically writes the report. You can request a copy through the CRIS portal a few days later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take photos at the border crossing?

Photography in CBP inspection areas is restricted. Take notes instead and request copies of any CBP incident report.

Does my insurance cover crashes on the bridge?

If you're on the US side, yes. On the Mexico side, only your Mexico policy applies.

Who writes the crash report at the border?

EPPD or DPS on the US side; Mexican federal police on the Mexico side. CBP secures the scene but does not write the actual crash report.

Will CBP detain me after a minor crash?

Not for the crash itself, but you cannot leave the inspection area until officers clear you. Be patient — this can take time during busy hours.

What if my car is disabled on the bridge?

Bridge tow services exist on both sides. Your towing and labor coverage may apply; confirm with your insurer.
